A few months ago my boyfriend approached me about teaming up together on an article on the A-Z Guide of Healthy Eateries in Auckland. The task of putting together a foodie feature that incorporates twenty-six (twenty-six, phew) different healthy hotspots around my hometown ridiculously indulges my obsession over anything food or nutrition related (my quintessential Auckland foodie endeavour, perhaps) so I was more than happy to oblige.
Auckland does have a bustling and seriously impressive healthy foodie scene. There's no denying the emergence of cafes, eateries, and restaurants that are catering, or have been created to cater, to the explosive 'health-movement'. There are of course many places on the A-Z list that cater towards specific dietary requirements or personal dietary approaches - lots of gluten-free, dairy-free, raw, vegetarian, vegan, organic, paleo-focused spots. However, we also noted quite an emergence of eateries focused on the more sustainable and ethical aspect of food, with many places heavily celebrating the use of fresh seasonal local ingredients, as well as products from local Kiwi companies and smaller businesses, for the fare they make. I really like this - I personally feel there's many more aspects to take into consideration when we talk about health, beyond what we're actually eating or what dietary approach the food might identify with. Aspects like, "where does my food come from?", "how many miles has it traveled to get to my plate?", or "who benefits from the money I am spending on this dish?". I know the last question might seem a little more extreme, but I do love the satisfaction that comes with passing on my money to local producers/companies down at the Farmers Market.
